Jourdan Dunn

I hate to be the bearer of bad news so if you haven't heard yet prepare yourself... Jourdan Dunn is pregnant. I found out via text, and I'll add that it was one of the worst text messages I've received all week. Of all models why  Dunn? and more importantly why now?  She's in my mental rolodex of iconic models, and it makes me sad to hear that she's going be on the sidelines for a bit. But, on the bright side another beautiful baby will be brought into the world and hey all jokes aside we may even get a maternity line out of this :D.

Do I Dare Say "Perfection!"?

Flaunt Magazine gives us a short story inspired by their latest cover. This model has amazing eyebrows, hair, and outfits. If I could make phone calls look this sexy you'd see me at your local phone booth everyday... Well, at least until I ran out of spare change haha.

Anna Wintour on CBS @ 7

"This is a really interesting time to be in this position and I think it would be, in a way, irresponsible not to put my best foot forward and lead us into a different time" - Anna Wintour

Campus Couture

With the absence of the normal fashion scene during Los Angeles Fashion Week it is refreshing to see that the fashion majors at Cal State Long Beach are still going strong and will be putting on the 21st Campus Couture fashion show Wednesday.

Every year it seems the show gets better and better, and Wednesday at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center will be no different.

Event-goers should expect to see a variety of garments from juniors and seniors. Junior designers have the opportunity to design a shirt and jacket, while the senior designers will have a little more freedom to create multiple pieces.

Although the students have to follow guidelines in the classroom, they have complete creative control over their designs.

“Personally, I think this show is the best thing I’ve done in college,” Tyler Rodriguez said. “We’ve done a really good job so far, I think. It looks like it’s going to be a really solid show.”

Students In Fashion

After participating in Kaleidoscope at California State University, Long Beach, I realized joining the fashion club "Students in Fashion" was one of the best decisions I have made throughout my college career. My initial objective was to gain experience in fashion to make my resume look a little bit brighter, and I did that. (After a long weekend at BOXeight studios as a personal slave for the unorganized producers for Los Angeles Fashion Week, then as a dresser and usher at the actual shows, I was able to finally say that I had experience in the fashion industry. However, I had no idea that I would end up meet interesting people and actually enjoy their company. "Students in Fashion" gives you the opportunity to network and more importantly socialize with people who have similar interests. This is important, because if you are anything like myself, you go to class and head straight home. Although your completing the task of going to school this boring pattern keeps your social standing at level one; because you never get a chance to actually know people who you are constantly around you. If you are a student at CSULB, I would definitely recommend becoming a member of "Students in Fashion". You will have to pay a small fee of admission, around $45. But, the cost is minor compared to all of the people you will meet and all of the things you will learn. I look forward to seeing you at the meetings on every other Wednesday next semester.

Landing an Internship

Whether you were inspired by Lauren & Whitney, "Running in Heels", or your childhood aspirations, I'm sure you have come to the realization that getting an internship isn't as easy as it seems. In my opinion finding your dream internship is like finding a needle in a haystack, however it is possible, and once you do find it you will notice the search was well worth it.

During the process of internship hunting several steps have helped me get an inch closer to where I want to be.

Step One: Research the company you want to be apart of. I had my eyes on Conde Nast, specifically WWD and Teen Vogue. I cannot tell you how many videos of editors I watched or message boards I stalked, or how many I emails I sent in hopes of reaching past interns or current editors to get an understanding of what they were looking for. Although, the answers were pretty generic ," Someone who is nice polite and interested in fashion",  it still helped to get in touch with them.

Step Two: Get experience, although it isn't required Editors or employers like to see it on your resume. This often brings the question "How do I get experience if no one will hire me because I don't have experience? ". In my case I was able to do this by working on my school newspaper. If you aren't in the journalism field try volunteering at any establishment that can help you in your quest. I volunteered at Teen Vogue events. Although, I didn't have a specific title, everyone seemed to be interested in the fact that Teen Vogue was listed on my resume. During an interview I was always asked this "So what's this about Teen Vogue?". It's an attention getter at the very least but it works.

Step Three: Build relationships as opposed to networking. When you get to know someone they are willing to help you out. Who knows the girl your sitting next to in class may help you land your first internship, as it happened in my case. Or your former boss may help you find other internships. Once someone has helped you return the favor, or at least try.

Step Four: Look for an internship early. Whether your using a website to help you find internships or your cold emailing people by looking up titles in the masthead, do it months before you think they are hiring for interns. If you get a call back, don't hesitate to set up your interview as early as possible. Last semester I set my appointment for the following week. A few days later I received an email that read "all the interns have been hired". The old saying "The early bird gets the worm" is very true.

Step Five: Ace the interview by dressing appropriately, arriving early, bringing your portfolio, and sending a thank you note. Although the idea seems aged, suits really do the trick but remember to add a little bit of your personality if the position isn't too serious. If you aren't comfortable with wearing a suit wear a black skirt. For a recent interview I wore a black pencil skirt with a black and white Tweed Jacket. I'm not sure if the outfit helped any, but it didn't hinder me from getting the job. Second arrive early and never late. Third, bring in a portfolio to show what you can do, this should include clips if you have them, your resume and cover letter. Finally, Send thank you notes. If you can try to incorporate something unique about you that your interviewer will be sure to remember you by. Recently an interviewer and I had a small conversation about my cover letter, and in my thank you note I simply said "Thanks for your cover letter advice".

Step Six: Wait patiently. Once you've sent a thank you note and followed up that's way more than enough. Don't harrass anyone with questions about whether you got the job or not. I used Robin Given's "Grace will Lead Me Home" and the film "The Fall" to keep me sane during the waiting period.

Good Luck and if you have any questions shoot me an email.

Best,

PS

Lakshmi Menon

I am "Dazed and Confused" as to why magazines don't always feature models like Lakshmi Menon on their covers. I hope we go back to the era where models dominated covers instead of celebrities. I am absolutely blown away by this issue. Everything about this look is amazing. Fin.

Malinda Williams is Tomboy Chic

During my internship at mystyle.com I got a chance to interview a few wonderful actresses. I'm going to post a few of the stories here. The first is with Malinda Williams and yes she looks like a little doll in person :D

To outsiders it may seem as though starlet Malinda Williams has always been effortlessly stylish. However, in her younger years she wasn't always so glamourous "well growing up I was kind of tomboy so I never wore dresses," said Williams. "So, now that I’m a woman I feel that there is a little bit of an edge to it because I feel that I still have a little bit of that tomboy in me."

Since tuning in to her inner-fashionista, Williams likes to splurge on luxurious bags... a Dooney & Bourke Python Bag to be exact. "It's my baby," she raved. "Listen, I walk in the room and see women just stop and look. It's stunning. And that’s what I see when I walk in the room the women are stunned and then I go about my business. But yeah, that’s my latest splurge I told my husband that its my new boo," laughed Williams.

When it comes to finding a great deal Williams knows how to invest wisely "Oh, my Mabelline great lash mascara. That’s it for me I'm not going to the department store for my mascara".

Check Malinda out in her new film "Nailed" with Jessica Biel.

OSCARS: best dressed

It was really exciting to see the Alteir Versace gown tonight on Marisa Tomei after spotting it on the Versace website last year. The pleats on the grey gown suited her figure perfectly.

Freida Pinto also stunned in a gorgeous one-armed blue gown by John Galliano.

Sarah Jessica Parker looked fabulous in a white Dior Haute Couture gown.

and Natalie Portman looked so young in her pink gown.
